A Milestone for Bastion No.1

The Friends of Bastion No.1 are delighted to say that our beloved Bastion No.1 has been officially removed from the national ‘at risk’ register. This milestone is the result of years of hard work, dedication, and passion from our community.

From fundraising efforts to advocating for the Bastion’s care, the Friends have worked tirelessly to ensure the historic defence structure is saved for generations to come. It’s been a true team effort, with local residents, and volunteers all playing a vital role in this achievement. Special thanks go to Gosport Borough Council and Historic England for their support.

The story about the Bastion being no longer at risk was so significant that it was reported on The News website. We also received several messages of congratulations, including from Gosport’s MP, Dame Caroline Dinenage and the Palmerston Forts Society. Dame Caroline wrote on Facebook: “It’s great to see our history being saved and cherished by local community groups like Friends of Bastion No1 Gosport”.

Bastion No.1 is a testament to our rich heritage, and we are so proud to have contributed to its conservation. This victory is not just for us, but for the whole community. It is a significant milestone, but it is only a start and we look forward to continuing our work to protect and celebrate this remarkable piece of history. Thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey!
