Who are the friends?

Preserving heritage for the community

Friends of Bastion No.1 is a voluntary, non-political, not-for-profit group based in Gosport, Hampshire. Formed in 2018, we are dedicated to the protection, preservation, and promotion of Bastion No.1 – a significant Scheduled Monument that once formed part of Gosport’s historic defences. As one of the few remaining structures of its kind, Bastion No.1 stands as a powerful reminder of the town’s military heritage and coastal defence legacy.

Our group was founded by local residents who recognised the historical importance and fragile condition of the site. Since then, we have grown into a committed team of volunteers from all walks of life, united by shared values of heritage conservation, community involvement, and public education. We believe that local history should be protected and enjoyed by everyone, and that caring for our past strengthens our sense of place and identity.

We operate entirely through the time, energy, and goodwill of our volunteers. Our work includes regular site maintenance, historical research, public outreach, and advocacy for the ongoing preservation of Bastion No.1. We organise open days and educational events to raise awareness and bring the monument’s story to life for residents and visitors alike. Our activities are always inclusive, respectful, and rooted in a deep appreciation of local heritage.

We work closely with local authorities, heritage bodies, and the wider community to ensure that Bastion No.1 receives the care and recognition it deserves. All our efforts are guided by transparency, collaboration, and a shared commitment to safeguarding this historic site for future generations. If you would like to support our work or get involved, we warmly welcome new members, volunteers, and supporters. Together, we can ensure that Bastion No.1 continues to inspire and educate for years to come.
